Engrave, photograph and list all PropertyMarking your property with a property engraver like the one in this photograph may not prevent that property from being stolen, but it does increase the chance of that property being returned to you if it is stolen. Property marking also serves as a deterrent since pawning an item that has been marked is not only difficult, it is also a possible way to track down a thief. To mark your property, place your driver’s license or identification card number, the state and expiration year on the item as seen below:
EXAMPLE: L12345678/AZ/2016
DO NOT use your social security number. This marking should be placed on a separate spot on the item. One obvious and one hidden. You also need to make a written list of the property that is marked, photograph it and list its value. Keeping a receipt for the merchandise will allow you to get better compensation if and when a claim is made. Also, make sure that you keep this list in a safe location, we suggest storing it in a safety deposit box, a safe or with a family member. And make sure that you keep your list updated on a regular basis.

Spread RisksDo not keep all of your valuables in one place and definitely do not
place your valuables in plain view. The
first place a burglar looks when he enters your home is the master bedroom
and the bureau drawers. Find
several hiding places that would not be easily found by someone searching
your home. (Some folks hide
things in the freezer, under a dresser that cannot be reached by opening
the bottom drawer, etc.) Be
creative.
